Fit checklist
- Share of spend Is groceries (and drugstore) really your largest category?
- Pay in full Carrying a balance? Interest usually wins—consider balance-transfer paths first.
- Caps & fees Ask on Ratehub whether elevated rates are capped and whether an annual fee applies.
- How cashback pays out Statement credit vs points portal—pick what you’ll actually redeem.
- Protect first Ontario renters with a proof request: finish tenant insurance fit before optimizing grocery earn.
Merchant-code literacy: your cart is not the category
Rewards normally follow the merchant category code attached to the transaction—not the products in your cart. Check posted transactions and issuer terms instead of assuming every food purchase qualifies as “grocery.”
- Loblaws / Sobeys concept Conventional supermarket banners may code as grocery, but banners, locations, online orders, and third-party delivery can differ.
- Costco concept A warehouse-club transaction may not count as grocery, and card-network acceptance also matters.
- Walmart concept A supercentre that sells groceries may still code as general merchandise rather than grocery.
- Delivery and gift-card trap The merchant of record and issuer rules can change category eligibility; the items purchased do not decide the code.
These are conceptual examples—not a promise about any chain, banner, location, card, or transaction.
